This is part folklore, part fantasy, part straight ahead adventure children's book with lovely illustrations by Enrico Arno (favorite one ever is the bed with the embroidered curtains). It is geared towards 9-12 years olds, with a female protagonist, Anemone, who helps thwart the evil mayor. It has some sly humor that probably goes over the head of younger readers but appeals to the adults. I reread it every year.Chris in NYnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046320545497573335.post-27961292000949192082011-04-25T13:26:37.981-04:002011-04-25T13:26:37.981-04:00Oh, I had that copy of "Black Beauty". It's a rather tacky cover, but I was mesmerized by the little vignettes - especially the violent ones.

I also had "Flip" and "Flip and the Cows" and many of Marguerite Henry's books that were illustrated by Dennis. When I was reading about "King of the Wind" (for this: http://newberryproject.blogspot.com/2007/02/king-of-wind.html) one article said that Dennis actually suggested that Henry write about the Godolphin Arab.Sandy D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08650640470141210550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046320545497573335.post-68071624603893836572011-04-25T12:11:23.837-04:002011-04-25T12:11:23.837-04:00I grew up on Wesley Dennis illustrations and love ...I grew up on Wesley Dennis illustrations and love them all, the sketchy as well as the more finished. The two girls are helped by their older sisters, Julia and Katie, who "acted important but not too important", in the dyeing of the eggs.
When Tacy's baby sister, who has been ill, dies, the girls find a wonderfully creative way to use the eggs.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10803671204299959847noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046320545497573335.post-62561101224810686222011-04-24T18:28:29.026-04:002011-04-24T18:28:29.026-04:00Regarding horse illustrations: I was looking at co...Regarding horse illustrations: I was looking at copies of National Velvet online the other day and noticed that Enid Bagnold's 13-year-old daughter, Laurian Jones, did the illustrations for the 1935 novel.Bybeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10061186489010154661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046320545497573335.post-78959544765566499702011-04-24T16:31:01.759-04:002011-04-24T16:31:01.759-04:00Ah, I'd forgotten about THE GOOD MASTER too.

My family loved those specials when I was a kid and a few years ago I got my mother videotapes of three of them (I think the Valentine's one was never released on tape.) But after we got videotapes, everything changed over to DVD and now you can't find a VCR at the store for love or money!

Thanks for your note,

PeterPeter D. It suffers a great deal from studio filming, and isn't as good as the first two stories.

The one children's book Easter segment I remember vividly is from The Good Master, where Jancsi introduces his city cousin Kate to the joys of a Hungarian Easter. The women and girls dress in all their petticoats, making them look like big flowers, and they spend time decorating eggs, and the boys splash the girls with water.Lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00684124498981972463noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046320545497573335.post-80459346321236406252011-04-24T13:57:05.114-04:002011-04-24T13:57:05.114-04:00Good one! It's kind of depressing, with Addie idolizing an alcoholic actress. (Addie and her friends also make dresses for a fashion show and Addie's has rickrack all over-- there's a trim you don't see much anymore!) Publisher's Weekly said it was "one holiday too many to spend with Addie." Ouch!grrlpuphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09755649595417118072noreply@blogger.com
